It's true that they're beating msn at the net game, but if Microsoft was competing with AOL in its accustomed manner, there wouldn't be any AOL icons anywhere near the default Windows desktop. (And AOL software might mysterious crash far more often than it does.) The point is simply that Microsoft decided partly cooperate with AOL in that segment in order to compete with their usual viciousness in the browser segment. They couldn't do both. AOL has benefited from that pullback.

Microsoft screwed up so much with msn again and again, they probably wouldn't have been much of a threat in any case, but they're very savvy at learning from mistakes. If you think AOL has felt the full force of MS competition, you're fooling yourself.

And by the way... MSNBC is a much different situation. Microsoft actually co-owns that.
