Derek I see Tulvio's question in a different light, so I'll throw in something here, hope it helps.

(I'm not EVEN going to try the tech. talk lingo)

If I am within say 15,000 feet from my telco switching center on a standard copper pair of wires, it is possible to get somewhere around 1.5mbps transfer rate with ADSL. If I'm closer the transfer rate should increase, this is one place having a x2 56K modem which is upgradable to ADSL would be desirable, IF such a service is available.

Now if my business location is within an area where an upgrade program is being conducted, such as
the one PAC BELL is doing here in California.I would want modems which could be upgraded from 56K to ADSL, without a hardware change. Hence an x2 56K modem with a C6X chip.

The extra price for this chip could be cost effective over a chip swap at a later date.let alone being less disruptive to business.

See this site for the BACKBONE information.
