Dhanin Chearavanont wants to his improve his breeds through cock-fighting. The multi-millionaire chairman of Chareon Pokphand, Thailand's biggest agricultural conglomerate, yesterday emerged as the driving force behind a push to legalise cock fights in a bid to promote skinny native breeds for health-conscious export markets. The group is supporting the Thai Indigenous Chicken Conservation and Development Association's efforts to draw up rules and safety regulations for fights after experimental regional bouts in Chon Buri at the weekend. Amid protests by animal rights groups and anti-gambling leagues, the association insists its rules will require special gloves to be fitted over birds' claws and will outlaw betting. Mr Dhanin announced his support for regular fights, saying struggling farmers would be given a new lucrative source of income as top fighters could earn considerable sums when put to stud.
