Not bad for a company that cannot afford to compete with the deep pockets of MU

Samsung Developed 128M DDR SDRAM

02/09(È) 16:36

Samsung Electronics announced Feb. 8 that it had developed 128 Mbytes
DDR(Double Data Rate) Synchronous DRAM which is expected to be the mainchip in the memory market of 2000 and decided to start mass commercial production of it in the 2nd half of the year.

This DRAM, substituting both Rambus DRAM and the current synchronous
DRAM is suitable for PC servers, workstations and data communication
distinctively from rambus DRAM for general PCs, the company said. The chip has improved speed of 266§Ö, transmitting 26 million characters per second by 2.5 times over the existing product.

In particular it is a type of one-chip, integrating synchronous DRAM and DDR SDRAM into a single one and supports every new transmission protocol between CPU(Central Process Unit) and memory including PC-100 and PC-133.

This company has already developed 64M DDR SDRAM for the first time
among chipmakers and provided its samples to major computer manufacturers last year. It intends to preoccupy the market with this new memory as well as rambus DRAM.

Cho Su-in, the managing director of DRAM design department at this firm said that DDR DRAM is becoming one of the semicon standards of JEDEC, the organization for international semicon standardization owing to the company's endeavor and the company intended to control this market with completed commercial production in the 2nd half.
