I am so glad you started this thread because I was getting real tired of OT discussions and also stockholders of other companies opinions. With that being said, I feel that Compaq is putting together a plan that builds on the fact that they are the #1 PC maker in the world. First, the acquisition of Digital provides them with a service staff that is unprecedented in the industry besides IBM. Second, the AltaVista spinoff will provide them with a portal on the internet. They have begun to add to AltaVista with the addition of Shopping.com which is taking off. Third, AltaVista replacing Inktomi as the chief search engine for Microsoft IE will provide maximum exposure. Fourth, going to the direct sales model (a la Gateway and Dell) which will take market share from those two competitors. In conclusion, the #1 PC maker with a great service staff and great access to the internet provides a powerful package. Compaq shareholders need to stay patient until Wall Street appreciates the fact that Compaq has left its competitors behind and moved to the next level.
