I think it was Popular Science that had a recent feature on high-tech in the military that featured a "militarized" Newton 120.

The device has a GPS (Global Positioning System) and a cellular PCM-CIA modem. The software accepts intelligence data via satellite and coordinates this information with built-in mapping software and uses to GPS to place the users location on the map. With all the data sorted out, it creates a map that identifies danger areas in relation to the users position (ie., enemy troop movements, minefields, chem/bio/radiation contaminated areas.) It's all wrapped up in a rubberized armor case (somewhat like the "Seahorse" Newton that can be purchased through a third party vendor.

It surpised the heck out of me! I have over ten years in the military and all the technology I've seen has been fifteen years out of date. Our backbone commo sytems are set up using shareware Unix apps, 286 processors and computers, with 4 Megabyte hard drives. To have them build something like this out of an Apple product is surpising! But then, all the above options are available as off-the-shelf components for the Newton.

I'm sure this helped reduce the development costs. There are currently no other PDAs that I know of that have all the features of the Newton with 3rd Party hardware and software options. If y'all know any PDAs that have these things, let the government know. I'm sure Apple is charging them a bundle!
