Thanks, K. Reading this still does not explain why GS would give CPQ a neutral rating and DELL, a recommendation.
My reading is that DELL is talking about things in general, conditions that will favor all companies in their sector, not merely them. If I were an analyst at the meeting, this section would be a big nothing:
>Dell is also mulling other computer-related product offerings to take advantage of a rise >in e-commerce via growth in the Internet services offered by such companies as AT&T >(T) and At Home (ATHM).
"Mulling" = thinking about, considering. There is a _big_ difference between mulling and "developing."
My reading is that CPQ talks more about how they are doing and what they are doing.
Re the section on Alta Vista and our speculation on the thread about shareholders getting a piece:
>The company is planning to >sell 15 to 20 percent of AltaVista in an initial public offering.
This is a _very_ small percentage to be spinning-off in an IPO. It makes me think that maybe 15-20% will be offered to the open market via an IPO, another percentage (30% +/-) will be spun-ff to us, and CPQ will keep the rest. Obviously, time will tell but it makes no sense to me for CPQ to merely divest itself of a maximum of 20% of AltaVista.
