This press release is a little worrying for ESST:

biz.yahoo.com

Creative's AudioPCI64 add-in card offered as an option in Compaq Deskpro PCs. The Compaq Deskpro line is by far the biggest contract ESS has in the PC audio space. Now, this press release does not mean that ESS chips will no longer come as standard in those systems, but it does raise some concerns. Such as, will Compaq use ESS's PCI audio solution in the Deskpro line? Will Compaq offer no-audio models with only the Creative board as an audio option? The mentioned board is certainly a low-end card with an outdated and simplistic Ensoniq chipset.
