Shark is the next generation mainframe and intermediate DASD
sub-system that is in development now. Dont know who the IBM exec is
who made this comment. Frankly, it is premature and not particularly
smart to tip your hand. Current mainframe DASD is OEM'd from STK and
relabeled by IBM. That deal sucks since the price points were
skewed incorrectly. To beat EMC you need performance, capacity,
function and price. The terms and conditions and business practices
used by IBM are far superior to EMC. End-users hate EMC. I have
heard consultants describe this customer sat issue as "EMC customers
experience overwhelming unhappiness". EMC is more arrogant than IBM's
mainframe business in the 80s if that is at all possible. So the
pie is there for the taking. It requires a better box at a
competitive price and end-users will throw out EMC. Shark has the
potential to be that box but we will just have to wait and see. I
would be interested to know where the article came from that had the
executive quotes in it assuming it was for public consumption.
