Well, I kind of envy friends who speak grandly of "my accountant" this or "my lawyer" that

Because I hold oil royalty trusts and have all sorts of weird tax situations in addition, I can't use an ordinary tax service. I think my mother used to pay her accountant hundreds of dollars a year for a relatively simple set of services--and she provided him with ready-made lists of everything that had to be included. But because I have a weakness for adventurous professional and financial arrangements, the only accountant who could understand these things would charge a substantial fraction of my income (various mark-to-market,depreciation, carryovers, basis adjustments, travel expenses, professional expenses, etc, etc.) But I also do all my plumbing and electrical work, too. The government can't tax you on what you do for yourself.

Anyway, I find that with Turbo Tax I can get everything done in a few hours and save enough to pay for about half the computer in the process. And if I devote the computer to professional and financial purposes, I can depreciate it, too.
