SHOP AT HOME INC. (SATH) 17 -3. Shares of diversified media company are not getting much response to its announced plan to launch a collectibles Web site as e-commerce stocks appear to have dropped out of favor with investors. Just a month ago, such an announcement would have caused a spike in the stock price as investors were enamored with companies that did business on the Internet. Unfortunately, the Internet has lost some of its levitation powers and companies are no longer profiting by just announcing new ventures that will take place on the Internet. Earlier today, Shop at Home announced that it would team up with Oracle and iXL to create a premier online community for collectible shopping and information. With this auction and collectible territory already spoken for by the likes of eBay and ONSALE (with the cooperation of Yahoo!), it seems that Shop at Home may have waited too long and have a tough time breaking into online retailing, although its site will take advantage of real-time video to enhance the Web experience. The site is also not expected to be up and running until the third quarter of this year, which could prove to be another disadvantage for Shop at Home. The main reason the stock is not going up, however, seems that investors are finally coming to their senses and not tripping over each other trying to buy shares blindly following the creation of a new Web related offering or association. If this keeps up, more and more companies will again need to turn towards growing sales and earnings the old fashion way in order to enhance shareholder value and not just turning on the printing press.
