It is, indeed, unseemly, but Hyde has not been a particularly self- righteous guy. He is temperamentally moderate, and not given to harsh rhetoric. I think he is sincere in viewing this as an issue of the President not being above the law, not a sex- prosecution, in which case his earlier reticence is immaterial.
