The answer to your question is simple -- they didn't have a smaller backlog than they thought; it was just smaller than you thought. Management doesn't (or shouldn't) use total company backlog as a planning or budgeting statistic -- it's only useful on a divisional or departmental level. The fact that the guys at the top apparently weren't aware that the number reported to analysts and shareholders was off by 25% is not comforting but, if the cause was as stated, this faux pas shouldn't affect their operating results.
