Thanks for the update on Proxymed.

Do you know when they first announced a medical transaction portal strategy? The last time I looked at them was about a year ago, and I didn't understand them as a potential competitor to HEON. At that point they just looked like a physician practice management company--similar to Advanced Health, only with more honest managment. I admit that I could have missed that aspect, then, however. My research was just an opinion for somebody on the net.

It is natural for PILL to move over to the net and to attempt to become a medical transaction portal.

But my appraisal is that the battle for dominance of the medical transaction portal market will hinge primarily on relationships between companies, and less so on software. The software must be decent, but beyond this, it is all about deals. Relationships are where Kleiner Perkins excels via their keiretsu. If you doubt this, check out the September article in Fortune about KPCB. I will concede that the keiretsu is more about computers and information, than about companies in the medical field, however.

WebMD may become a contender. But we should appreciate how young the Web MD alliances are. At McKessen/HBO's presentation at the Jan 99 H&Q conference, there was not a single word said about the medical transaction portal market. I have a tape of that talk, and listened to it again after reading about the announcement of the alliance with WebMD.

Best Regards,
Tom
