The Internet-Spirit.....

>>What happened to " let the market come to you, Eric."? I liked that Internt-spirited strategy. Change of heart?>>

Eric and the rest of Novell's leadership knows the value of disciplined spirit, especially when it's backed by a quality product.

The Internet spirit is all about FREEDOM.

There is more than enough FREEDOM going around right now in "internet-time".

Freedom bears a cost, however. That cost is born in humility - placing yourself and your company in the position of "serving others" rather than controlling others. The other aspect of the Internet Spirit of freedom is the underlying trust it demands from ALL the players who come to eat from this "new table" where people, companies, nations and groups are all potentially united in this open band of connectivity.

If you want a glimpse at the Internet Spirit, you can go back to Thomas Paine - read his writings, feel his energy, live his words and never look back.

Sounds corny, but Paine is the founder of the Internet Spirit. This great nation broke the back of tyranny, ushered in the industrial revolution which blazed into the technology revolution that's been an ongoing quest for openness, clarity, transparency and truth.

The truth is the energy we are feeding off of in this bandwidth frenzy going on all around us.

The fiber-fired foundation of Internet and the new frontier of digital wireless spectrum, broadband and satellites - all combine to break open the old business models that rewarded those who killed, trumped, witheld, dodged and slipped their way around the truth.

The only currency that really matters anymore is the state of our minds. Ideas, freely gifted out, nurtured and developed into value-added products and solutions to others are finally in the open domain where light and truth, not darkness, rules.

The Internet Spirit is all about the fusion of technology with a spiritual plane - a medium whose growth is the first living, breathing, amazing proof of the core truism that defines that value of all life: give and you shall receive more.....

Everyday people from all walks of life come to their keyboards to pay homage - whether they understand this energy or not - to the freely gifted value of life that we all are blessed with every day.

And these gifts are there for anyone to take - unconditionally. Take or give. Destroy of add value.

Those who practice taking and destruction seek protections from government to hide their game and seal their lock on the system for they do not trust in the goodness of man.

Those who practice giving and adding value destain protections from government for they trust in the underlying goodness of man.

The Internet Spirit is challenging the entire world to come clean on where people stand on this issue. Distrust or trust. Control or let be. Close down or open up.

The race is on. We know from the record of the just these last few years - even moreso during the intial stages of Wave 2 with Amazon and others - that ALL the old protections and controls are being thrown out the window as new player after new player distrupts and turns upside down the old pyramids of corporate and government power.

If a pyramid is turned upside down, the former bottom becomes this "new plane" of freedom for those who were formerly unable can now rise and leverage their ideas and gifts for the benefit of mankind.

I predict a backlash is brewing. It will come from special interests the world over - fueled by corporations and governments fearful of losing control and power. We are right smack in the middle of a golden age of freedom fired by technology, but there are forces that are crafting ways to "cap" or forestall this progress.

I picked Novell for the technology, business model and the spirit of those inside the company for I really believe they feel they are on a mission. But the mission is a quiet one. Freedom is a humble yet courageous force that fuels the imagination of young and old minds for nothing will propell a man more than an inner belief that he or she is behind a mission that's right for themselves and the world at large.

My late Dad always said, "leave this world a little bit better than when you arrived." This ingrained passion for good and the belief in what's good inside our fellow man is the true Internet Spirit.

Eric the Red. Go!
