JLA, although I still think that civility should be the norm in argument, I must say that after having made so much of an effort with Daniel, it is a shock to me to discover how full of bile he really is. He cannot stand the idea that those who oppose Clinton might have normal reasons, and so he has to make up all sorts of defamatory claims. Of course, he is not alone. The silly debate over Chris Matthews was revealing--- it is ruled out of the question that he could be a normal centrist Democrat, he must have become a right- winger and/or be pandering. Daniel is full of common debaters foibles: an excessive reliance on citations; a constant search for something to pounce on, rather than a willingness to engage the full thrust of an opponent's arguments; the belief that sarcasm is a normal vehicle for carrying an argument forward; an over- fondness for one's own clever formulae, and hence the mistaken impression that they bear endless repetition. But it turns out that he is more than a clumsy and somewhat over- zealous debater. There is genuine bad faith involved, and a curious animus.
