NTT DoCoMo, Puma Agree to Collaborate on Software
February 5, 1999 (TOKYO) -- NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc. (NTT DoCoMo) and Puma Technology K.K. announced Feb. 1 that they agreed to develop Intellisync Anywhere, a new business application for cellular phones.
Intellisync Anywhere is a business application for "iMode," a new service offered by NTT DoCoMo for mobile telephones. It enables use of mobile phone handsets for client terminals using groupware.
Softbank Corp. announced that it agreed with Puma Technology to promote sales and support Intellisync Anywhere in Japan. The software is slated to be released in the autumn of 1999.
Intellisync Anywhere is for the groupware Exchange Server of Microsoft Co., Ltd. and Lotus Notes Domino of Lotus Development Japan Ltd. The price of Intellisync Anywhere is estimated at about 10,000 yen (US$88) per client, said Ken Miyauchi, executive vice president of Softbank.
"We plan to offer a discount when the clients increase in the future," Miyauchi said.
Puma Technology is developing the software for iMode, a text-based information service to be started by NTT DoCoMo on Feb. 22.
Also, Puma Technology plans to take part in the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) service that the Cellular Telephone Group and IDO Corp. will offer from April.
When iMode, WAP and similar services are available, more mobile telephones with Web browsers will be offered by handset manufacturers.
Utilization of mobile telephones as client terminals enables users to receive email regardless of their location.
Intellisync Anywhere features a function that allows users to select preferences for messages that they wish to forward to other mobile telephones.
For example, users can sort and forward mail messages with a title of "emergency" from specified senders to designated mobile telephones. To take advantage of this function, users must set up Intellisync Anywhere on a desktop PC in advance.
Intellisync Anywhere also has a variety of convenient sorting features. |
