Finally good news:
Thursday, February 11, 1999 Nissan Diesel To Shut Truck Plant, Cut More Jobs
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Nissan Diesel Motor Co. (7210), the truck-making affiliate of Nissa n Motor Co. (7201), will shut down a domestic truck-assembly plant and step up job cuts as part of a push to return to profitability in the coming fiscal 1999 year, sources familiar with the company's plans said Wednesday.
Revved-up restructuring at Nissan Diesel is expected to put struggling Nissan Motor in a stronger position in ongoing talks with DaimlerChrysler AG over a possible capital alliance.
Facing a second consecutive year of losses in fiscal 1998, Nissan Diesel plans to close its Gunma plant at some point during fiscal 1999, consolidating truck assembly at its main Ageo facility. The Gunma factory, which assembles midsize trucks, is Nissan Diesel's second-largest manufacturing base.
Nissan Diesel will also terminate its Ageo casting department, ultimately integrating all domestic production at the main Ageo plant.
In October, Nissan Diesel announced plans to eliminate 2,500 jobs on a group-wide basis. The company has now lifted the target to 3,000 positions, or roughly 25% of its group work force.
In a separate move aimed at raising efficiency, Nissan Diesel will formally merge with sales unit Nissan Diesel Seller Co. in fiscal 1999. The Tokyo office of Nissan Diesel Seller will close in May, with its functions transferred to the parent headquarters.
