My point was that Intel's internet performance claims are silly. There is no need to buy an expensive microprocessor to do a simple task like compression/decompression.


Just for arguments sake... compression/decompression can be much more abstract than simple encoding/decoding schemes.

Take for example real-time NURBS tessellation of 3D models. That'll be a form of data compression that I doubt your FPGA chip will do so well... I might have to transmit several hundred control points (NURBS data) instead of several thousand vertices (polygon data). If I can tessellate on my local PC (let's say you might need a more powerful one to do this...), then that sounds like a 10X compression of data that has to travel across the internet... all without changing your Internet Service Provider, modem, etc...

And my NURBS algorithm has plenty of other features: level of detail control, deformable surfaces, etc...

Just an example...
