Wireless Consortiums Agree To Coordinate Digital Coverage

NEW ORLEANS -- Two large wireless-telephone consortiums have reached agreement on a pact that is expected to create seamless digital coverage for their cellular phone users.
The GSM Alliance and the Universal Wireless Communications Consortium represent different digital-wireless standards used in the U.S. The two groups disclosed their new arrangement at the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association trade show here.
The pact will allow customers to use their wireless phones on either the global service for mobile communications standard or the time-division multiple-access standard. This will enable regional players such as Omnipoint Communications Inc. and Powertel Inc., which operate on the global system for mobile communications standard, to offer their customers the ability to "roam" onto larger national networks such as AT&T Corp.'s wireless system, which uses the time-division multiple-access standard.

FWIW, I do not see Eric and Siemans linking up. Siemans has data comm links, NN, that seems to work for them. Ericy is definetly looking for partners in certain areas, but I do not think it is with Siemans.
