The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999 edition that Inflazyme Pharmaceuticals' shares advanced 57 per cent yesterday after the company executed a $91-million (U.S.) collaboration deal with Hoechst Marion Roussel, a unit of German drug giant Hoechst AG. The Globe's Leonard Zehr writes that both firms will collaborate to develop treatments for allergies, asthma and other respiratory diseases using Infazyme's IPL576 and Hoechst Marion's H1/NK1 drug compounds. Inflazyme says the Hoechst deal enables it to accelerate and broaden the development of its novel IPL576 series of compounds while strengthening its product development pipeline with the addition of the N1/NK1 inhibitor. Inflazyme expects to enter Phase I clinical trials with its IPL576 asthma compound during the second quarter this year. Inflazyme says that in preclinical tests, the drug has been effective compared with steroids, the existing treatment for inflammatory diseases, but without the side effects of taking steroids.
