2 x 97 means there is someone who wants to buy 2 board lots at the bid price, and someone(s) who wants to sell 97 board lots at the ask price.

A board lot is:
stock $1.00 and over - 100 shares
$0.11-0.99 - 500 shares
over $0.10 - 1000 shares

You can tell if there are more sellers or more buyers at a given time.
If there are more sellers, the stock is about to go down, unless a large buyer steps in out of the blue and scoops up the shares offered for sale.

Most quote systems will give you the size of the current bid and ask, but fancier systems (the ones brokers use) have the entire "book", meaning all the shares wanted (and at what prices), and all the shares offered (and at what prices). This way the broker can get an even better picture about whether the stock will go up or down in the next 30 minutes.
