China's 1998 LPG Imports Rise 33% as Demand Surges, Report Says

Hong Kong, Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- China's import of liquefied petroleum gas rose 33 percent in 1998 to 4.77 million tons, thanks to a jump in domestic consumption and a decline in international prices, the China Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Industries reported. China's domestic demand has grown more than fivefold to 10.07 million tons in 1998 from 1.9 million tons in 1990, said the report, published twice- monthly by China's official Xinhua news agency. That helped fuel an annual increase of 59 percent in imports since 1990, the report said.
While the Chinese government does not restrict LPG imports, it does restrict imports of crude oil and bans the import of gasoline and diesel.
