ZDNet Deploys Fast Engines' Fast.Serv Web Performance Solution
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 11, 1999--Fast Engines, the
leader in web server acceleration middleware, announced that ZDNet has
selected Fast Engines' Fast.Serv Pro as an approved enterprise-level
technology for dynamic delivery.
Fast.Serv Pro is Fast Engines' implementation of the FastCGI protocol
for Netscape (NASDAQ:NSCP - news) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT - news) web
servers. Originally developed by Open Market (NASDAQ:OMKT - news),
FastCGI is the open solution to the performance problem known as the CGI
bottleneck. FastCGI greatly improves the performance of dynamic web
sites by allowing existing applications to run persistently and securely
as isolated processes, without requiring a costly re-write to conform to
one of the proprietary web server extensions or application servers.
ZDNet has used FastCGI to support high traffic applications in the areas
of advertising, profiling, and dynamic content generation.
''Fast Engines' Fast.Serv plug-in for Netscape servers allows us to
deploy applications across any of our web servers without having to
write and maintain separate API level implementations,'' said Ned
Rhinelander, Manager of Business Applications for ZDNet.
The key benefits that the Fast.Serv FastCGI product from Fast Engines
affords ZDNet are:
- Very rapid application deployment.
- Flexibility in failover, load balancing, and session affinity in both
Apache and Netscape servers.
- The ability to easily switch server software as business conditions
change.
- An open standard with published source code.
- The capability for each web application to run securely in its own
process space, or even on its own dedicated machine behind a firewall.
''We are excited to be working with Fast Engines,'' continued Mr.
Rhinelander. ''Their highly competent technical support organization was
always there when we needed it. Fast.Serv performed so reliably in our
exhaustive internal testing, that it was quickly approved for use in
some of our most mission-critical processes. With the reliable
commercial support and rich functionality that Fast Engines has
incorporated into Fast.Serv, the FastCGI protocol is truly ready for
prime time in e-commerce, electronic publishing, and other
mission-critical web applications.''
