Fred: You make a very good point - and an important one.
In this sector, much of the technology is off-the-shelf. Companies deliberately go that route so that they can choose the best products and update at relatively low cost. The World is full of great proprietary products that have ended up in a junk yard.
What distinguishes one company from another is positioning and most importantly, alliances!
In their sectors, Microsoft & INTEL are far from cutting edge.
Their stockholders are not worried.
