Outlook bleak for independent ISPs

Unless Internet service providers sign up at least 300,000 subscribers, the future of their already-squeezed business is
uncertain, a new study concludes. Competition is driving access pricing lower, regional telephone companies are quickly
moving into the business by leveraging their brand names, and companies such as America Online and Yahoo! are re-defining themselves to deliver content-related services. "Much larger subscriber bases may be required by ISPs that want to rely on advertising as a major source of revenue, as do many providers of free access," says Katrina Bond,
co-author of the report by a telecommunications-research firm called Analysys of Cambridge, England.
