Raymond-
Maybe you don't want to talk to your washing machine, refrigerator, heating/cooling system, home alarm system, etc., however, when the appliances need service, or the warranty is about to run out, or you have a burglar when you are on vacation...these machines can talk through the net to the service center for scheduling repair or warranty work or a diagnostic scan or to the police to send the swat team, etc.
The future is having everything absolutely personalized based on profiles developed when we buy something ask about something or enter our preferences about something. This information will not be for sale to telemarketers to bug us, it will be used to provide us with personalized service based on our previous choices.
Investments in this new future are in stocks like Broadcom for the communications part, Spyglass and Sun Microsystems for the software part and Doubleclick for the profile part. (Of course, there are lots of other equities in each of these areas.)
I recommend Harry Dent's new book "The Roaring 2000's" for some overview on future tech.
