There have been conversations with Microsoft about using Windows CE but I assume GI will be using the Aperios (Sony) operating system.
From the original Sony/GIC announcement:

Additionally, GI will promote Sony's Home Networking Module as a preferred implementation of a home network architecture using the i.LINK (IEEE1394) digital interface.>>
TCI's Malone advocates a completely open architecture where advanced set top box will operate darn near any operating system (Java, CE, etc.)

Frankly, I'm hoping they will take a look at using a Linux kernel, eventually.
