Johnd, Blow out quarter ---You bet!
However, I probably won't keep my options going into earnings unless the stock for some reason does not explode upwards. Going to put it into stock on the day of earnings release (or a day or two earlier).

So as far as my stategy is concerned, it does not matter if the quarter is a blow out--I plan to make all the money I want in March and first half of April. I just know the expectation of a blow out among investors will cause reductions in short positions. In addition big momentum investors will pile on causing huge gains. Whether there are blow out earnings or not is of little consequence to me(although i suspect earnings will be amazing).

IF DOW hit 10,000 in April--you can bet MSFT would be above 110 by earnings(split adjusted).

BTW-The same type of momentum investors that have pushed DELL from 65 to 102 in about 2 months will jump on the MSFT train after Dell's earnings. Remember MSFT's earnings were phenomanal compared to good earnings for Dell. I think I am conservative in my prediction of 110 by earnings. This has everything to do with psychology and not much with "valuation models". However, among tech I like MSFT valuations anyways.

JMHO of course.
