One good point about ESS's diversification into modem chips is that it increases the average ESS chip content of each PC, since the modem(+audio) chipsets go for $20, instead of the $5 or lower (a bit of a guess) associated with audio chips. If ESS has scored more design wins like the recently announced HP design, this will be a substantial revenue contributor. A similar trend of increasing average chip ASP should be associated with the transition from ISA to PCI audio. Overall this change in product mix could have a favorable effect on revenues, and possibly (hopefully) on gross margins, although the company was cautious on this point in the conference call.
