Douglas,

My initial take on NGIO:

1. I think it is based on a technology designed to cluster processors rather than storage devices.

2. A big throughput to storage drives does not currently make sense, since the rate limiting transfer will still be a the level of the controller/disk and even in the forseeable future it will be extremely slow relative to a gigabit switched bus. The switched fabric the NGIO folks talk about may be best suited for processor clustering rather than storage.

3. The release about the NGIO folks wanting to put an NGIO port in a Silkworm begs the question - why? My answer would be 1 and 2 above as well as cost competitiveness.

4. What about Ancor's "switch on a chip" that has been touted in at least two tech articles in the past 1 1/2 years? Will there eventually be a level of integration that 64 or 128 ports will have the same footprint as the current 16 port design. Could this be moved into a central storage manager or server?

5. I don't follow Intel that closely, but it seems to me they have tried moving networking functionality to the motherboard (ethernet) and it was not a smashing success (ethernet hardware companies are still in business).

Just a few observations. Engineers, please correct me where I am wrong.
