I am neither a pollyanna nor a doom and gloomer, just someone who is trying to be as informed as possible about the risks.

This is mere speculation, and call me cynical if you like, but Peter de Jager has gone from relative obscurity to rich, world famous Y2K guru in the last two years. There may be just the tiniest shred of possibility that he is playing both ends of the game here. There is no doubt money to be made calming the panicked masses now in the final year before January 1, 2000. After all, there's no more money to be made in speaking engagements sounding the alarm over Y2K. Been there, done that, and the business community is sick of it.
