Ms. Sheila Grant reports
Some of Canada's most promising small and mid-cap biotechnology companies
are taking their stories directly to retail brokers and private investors in one of the
first industry-specific tours of its kind. Beginning Feb. 16, seven publicly listed
companies will be travelling on a five-city tour to expose investors to growth
investment opportunities in the biotechnology sector. Over the last two years, the
sector has been ignored by the capital markets, but the veil may be lifting. January
returns for the TSE biotechnology and pharmaceutical index were 8 per cent
compared with 3.8 percent for the TSE 300.
The sessions will highlight the latest advances in medical research and product
development in such areas as cancer, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis,
Alzheimer's dementia, and chronic inflammatory diseases.
The group of seven firms hosting the meetings are: Allelix Biopharmaceuticals,
Inc., Angiotech Pharmaceuticals Inc., Cangene Corp., Ibex Technologies Inc.,
Inex Pharmaceuticals Corp., Nortran Pharmaceuticals Inc., and StgressGen
Biotechnologies Corp.
The sessions will take place in the following cities: Vancouver, Feb. 16, Four
Seasons Hotel, 1:30 pm; Calgary, Feb. 17, Delta Bow Valley Hotel, 1:30 pm;
Edmonton, Feb. 18, Hotel MacDonald, 1:30 pm; Toronto, March 2, TSE
Conference Facility, noon; Montreal, March 3, Queen Elizabeth Hotel, noon.
Admission is free.
