Technical specification/comparison of Globalstar and Iridium phones:

Length Width Thickness Weight Talk time Standby

G* 7.25" 2.5" 1.75" 13.5 oz 1 hr 5 hrs

I* 7.37" 2.37" 1.5" 14 oz 2 hrs 16-20 hrs

The specifications for the Globalstar phone come directly from Qualcomm's own spec sheet published in the September, 1998. The Globalstar phone is called "tri-mode", which means it operates in satellite mode and the CDMA and AMPS cellular protocol. Note that Iridium's phone operates in all these modes, as well as the GSM cellular protocol.

Question: Why doesn't Globalstar's phone support the GSM protocol, which is in wide use in many areas of the world? Or is GSM a subset of the AMPS protocol? If not, doesn't this put Globalstar at a disadvantage to Iridium?

In appearance, the phone pictured in the Qualcomm sheet is plain in appearance, and does not have a keypad cover (which could, in my opinion, allow the power switch to be accidentally activated). I do not see a major design advantage to this phone.
