I agree that if Clinton gets his way, the forecast is gloomy, but I think he is too damaged, quite frankly, and therefore I am hopeful. By the way, I wanted to make it clear that the primary consideration that MIGHT have caused me to acquit (and, again, probably not) would be the risk of removing a President without a clear political consensus absent a grave, immediate danger to the Republic. Not the risk to the Republican Party, but the risk to the body politic. On the other hand, I think that public opinion might finally have changed had there been a consensus formed within the Senate, or at least enough cross- over vote from the Democrats. Finally, if there would be no removal, the political turmoil argument fails to hold, and the ratification of the Houses action becomes paramount. Therefore, in two out of three scenarios, I would vote to convict... |
