If the Republicans run a conservative for President they will be subject to a campaign similar to the one run against Barry Goldwater with the risk of massive Republican losses in the House as well as not regaining the White House. While this dooms day scenario may not come to pass the campaign will create great uncertainty.

At some point the Greenspan-Rubin era may be called the Golden Age for investors. It ain't gonna get this good again for a long time.
