MediaOne has become first U.S. cable company to choose open conditional access system, allowing digital set-top boxes from multiple manufacturers to be used in same market, company said Mon. It said it awarded contract to Philips Electronics, Canal Plus and DiviCom to incorporate European system in unidentified market by first quarter of next year, before U.S. OpenCable standard setting process is completed. "We're not waiting for the OpenCable specs to be complete," spokeswoman said. Judi Allen, senior vp-video, said markets and plans for pricing and packaging would be identified next month. "This means we can deploy set-top boxes based on the best product, the best price, the best features and the best timing," said Bud Wonsiewicz, MediaOne chief technical officer. Meanwhile, MSO said it expanded its agreement with General Instrument, with GI agreeing to incorporate international open system in all digital systems it supplies to MediaOne.
