You have a point here.

In real life, I work in a high-tech field on the R&D side. I see a lot of techno-dogma in papers.

Nearly all conference level papers start with a paragraph stating what has been done which is followed by a paragraph of what this particular technology is good for. Over the years, I have noticed that these "application lists" become established as dogma and persist long after the "moving knife" of reality has moved on.

A case in point is the idea of growing semiconductor crystals in zero-gee. A good idea in the 60's, completely obsolete in the late 90's (actually in the late 80's).
