Each person can only draw on his own limited knowledge and experience. None of us has lived in the future (at least, I don't think so!) so we each try to plan our lives as best as we can, in very uncertain times, based on our own tiny bit of history. Accordingly, I see nothing wrong in bringing whatever knowledge one has into the discussion.

"If we do not learn from the experience of others we will be condemned to repeat that experience" or something like that.

And I can assure you that in Africa, if one has to learn from the experience of others, the outlook is dismal, indeed. That's why I'm hoping against hope that there is a way out here.
