Biometrics

Identification and fraud prevention are key topics that will also be well represented both in the conference and on the exhibition floor. The latest developments in Biometrics – the automatic identification of individual people – will be featured at a significant ‘Biometrics Village,' a new feature to the Smart Card 99 exhibition. Organised in conjunction with the Association for Biometrics (AfB) ten exhibitor stands had been confirmed two months before the show's opening.

Among the many aspects covered in the Biometrics Village are: face recognition, finger scanning, hand and finger geometry, iris recognition, palm biometrics, retina, dynamic signature verification and voice recognition. The Biometrics Village will also explore likely future innovations in this fascinating and rapidly developing technology. Cherry Electrical Products, on Stand D32, will introduce to the UK for the first time, its ‘Fingerprint' recognition keyboard with smart card reader and a new generation of smart card data entry systems.

At a special Smart Card 99 ‘Biometrics Seminar' on 22nd February, Steve Torbe, Compaq's senior product manager for commercial desktops will discuss his company's use of biometrics fingerprint identification technology. David Mintie, Digital Imaging project director for the Department of Social Services for the State of Connecticut will cover the fascinating and controversial topic of ‘Biometrics in US Human Services Applications.' The Iris Scan System, which is currently on trial in Swindon, will be discussed by Professor John Daugman of Cambridge University.
