Yes, I'm aware that putting the cache on the multi-chip module allows additional performance improvement via the faster comm between CPU and SRAM. Still, the incremental cost to Intel is very low and they get a huge profit from the SRAM. Intel can get a big earnings boost if they can justify the additional cost.

But, there are several ways performance can be improved. You can put larger and cheaper SRAM off-chip, add additional CPUs and multitasking software, or buy a faster CPU from the workstation vendors. I've been under the (mistaken?) impression that you get diminishing returns when you increase cache size, but Intel seems to be saying that the speed of the cache is more important than the size and that you get a linear performance improvement with increased cache size.

Carrying this point a little further, Intel seems to count on future growth in the server market. AMD and Cyrix would be relegated to the future low-margin commodity PC workstation market. There was a big debate on the Intel thread about 6 months ago about network computers, and it looks like Intel is buying the vision of Sun and Oracle.
