PR is the problem right now and having the prodigal sons return to a company that is, intentionally or not, known as crunchy-granola (a la Ben & Jerry's), premium brand, "outsider," type of corporation is just what they need. (Sorry, I ran out of parenthetical punctuation to use or I could have gone on). There are certainly people like me who would like to make money, but are willing to be patient for a company that makes something they care about, and who consider investing in a company an investment on a larger scale.
Apple is a company this distrustful (cynical, even) coffee-achiever can support on principle. If I made a living on my investments, I'd probably think differently. Even since the advent of clones, I've still purchased from Apple (at a higher price) because I wanted them to have my dollars.
There are a couple of questions here regarding Apple's survival:
I have no worries that they can produce a robust and viable modern OS on schedule. In this instance, the question is, "Will it be in time?"
How the hell can they convince the media (or anyone else) that they are a viable platform? It's upstream in a big way, but salmon pull that off all the time. The new reorg might put someone in place who can handle this.
Do they dive in and open up the "any-OS-on-any-chip" can of worms, or do they wait for Be to do it?
Thoughtful comments appreciated.
