> I know I sound ignorant but who is Hubbard?

He was a mediocre science fiction writer who founded a "religion" after making a bet with Isaac Asimov in the 1950's. The gist of the bet was this:

Hubbard: The fastest way to get rich is to start a religion.

Asimov: No way.

Hubbard: Yes, way. Here, I bet I can do it.

Asimov: You're on.

Hubbard then went on to found scientology, along with its secret teachings of aliens landing in volcanoes and inhabiting present day humans. Followers include John Travolta, Tom Cruise, and a few other celebrities. The trick is that their "religious texts" are copyrighted and secret and cost about 300,000 dollars to gain access to per individual. You can read all about it at www.xenu.com

Xenu is the name of the evil super-god that you only discover after paying scientology 300,000 dollars for their courses, and as such scientology gets pissed when the average person mentions that name. Scientology got even MORE pissed when some people defected from the church a few years ago and posted their secret religions texts to the internet in their entirety. :)
