5fer is a CEO who has created almost zero incremental value for shareholders in years. CPQ stock was at $78 or so in 10/97 on a bunch of 5fer and the mason hype (pre-split). (note: during this time DELL has gone from roughly $100 to $360 on a pre-split basis, up 260% or so.) So for all his wasting of time and energy buying wrecked companies like Tandem and DEC, the shareholders are up about $8 per share in 1 1/2 years (while DELL rose 260 points). Wow! 10% in the biggest bull run in history. At that time I remember analyst quotes along the lines of "CPQ is so bullish they can't contain themselves", etc., etc. And what happened, Q397 they laid an egg. Q4 the same ... so it was time to do the DEC acquisition to muddy the waters a bit. Might be time again (how about AMD, they are messed up and a perfect 5fer candidate)! Then they can have another 2 years of "one-time charges" related to the integration of their latest acquisition(s).

5fer has blown it. His attempt to copy DELL's direct strategy has now cleverly set up CPQ as a direct competitor to DELL ... and believe it or not, CPQ! Nice move. It is very possible 5fer's next big negotiation will be his severance package.

DELL did great over a recent period of tough times for PC makers. Does anyone really believe that during great times DELL will do anything less than terrific? My bet is no.
