Excellent post. Thanks very much.

In following your leads I came across this site which I found instructive about where they have come from, who backed them (QPS Technology, and National Science and Engineering Research Council NSERC), and a bit about this crucial substance, sol-gel, even though the article shown had very tiny print. (In my Netscape 4.5, I right clicked the article itself, chose "Open In New Window" and the article became crystal clear and enlarged)( Or simply left click the article, I just found out that works too!):
