they wouldn't have ordered the new machines unless they felt they would be needed.

That was a well timed PR. What it said to me in retrospect was "while other low margin area's of our business are suffering, we are investing in the higher margin and more sustainable segments of our business". But was it enough? Why not more? The market is not there?

I would differentiate between a good business and a good investment, as each of us looks for different criteria for investment purposes. Has SE Asia bottomed? Does that mean currencies will recover enough to take away competitive advantage? I don't see it. There was a huge bubble, and recovery will be slow and steady. Unlimited capital will not flow back to the region as in the past.

So what does this mean for Deswell?. I believe the decline in revenues reflect a serious long term erosion of a core business. It is time to rethink the business. I will invest again in Deswell when I see a growth strategy. It is past time to sit back on the stuffed mattress and harvest.

IMO Deswell missed a huge business opportunity by not acquiring assets in SE Asia during its fire sale. Is it too late?
