D. - I sympathize with your situation(s). I have had a series of run-ins with the folks at the Infernal Revenue Service over the years, primarily as a result of a choice of a CPA some years ago who happened to be on the "aggressive tax preparer's" list. But I must say, in looking at it in perspective, I realize that at the time, I thought there was hope for reform and somewhere back in my mind I actually harbored feelings that "the system" would work for those of us who were under the heel of jealous, covetous and truly mean-spirited bureaucrats. So, I made the mistake of listening to someone who told me that the IRS couldn't get away with what it was trying to do to me. That was my mistake; I assumed we, us, you know - citizens, were all of the same "equal" standing.
We are not. We strive at the behest of those who have to take from us to maintain their, and their constituencies' power base. Should you rattle the chain, justice will engage but not always prevail.
In your listed item #3, do you not see a parallel with the ability of the powerful (i.e., Clinton) to get away with the same thing? It is not a system of pure justice - it is a system of money and the power and resources money can bring to move justice in the direction the opposition wants.
The real problem is a lack of accountability. At the root of all of these situations are people - often unidentified, faceless people who remain that way to avoid responsibility for the decisions they made and the actions they took. Accountability is anathema to bureaucracy. Individual actions must be shielded from the wrath of the affected.
D - it isn't "the government" that is responsible. It is people, real human beings with jobs that do these things to us. They are given their status as a result of a series of politically-motivated steps that end up in allowing other people to make regulations at the supposed behest (and the supposed oversight) of "our" elected representatives.
Our recourse, albeit frustratingly slow and seemingly unresponsive, is through our elected representatives. Anything else will get you into further trouble with "the system."
