i was hoping someone with more knowledge than me could answer your questions, but while we wait for that to happen <gg>, here are a few thoughts regarding your probs.

1) try right-clicking the recycle bin icon and select properties. search through the option settings on each tab and see if there is anything there that may point you toward the problem.

2) go to start, find, and type in volume control. you'll find it if it's still on your drive. you can then right click on it in the displayed list and select create shortcut on desktop.

3) same as 2 above for real player. might try uninstalling it and doing another install. i think real player's latest free version is g2, so you could upgrade to that.

stephen, are you currently running any kind of system utilities suite, like norton's? sounds to me like you may have some windows problems that a good system doctor software suite could clean right up.

anyway, just trying to take a stab at it with you. hope some of this helps!
