So let's be generous in our estimate and say we have another 150 years worth of oil. That means our great grandkids will run out. What about their kids, their kids' kids and so forth? And when you think that petro-chemicals go into practically every product we use, it just seems we ought to leave a few gallons around for the next millennium or two.

As for higher gasoline taxes, I would not be opposed if there was some assurance the money would be spent for something intelligent like actually fixing social security, alternative fuels research, mass transit that works, etc. Here in California we seem to think we can get people to quit smoking through higher tobacco taxes, and there is some evidence it is working. I realize this type of thinking is apt to get me expelled from the G.O.R. Club (Grumpy Old Republicans), but I guess I'm just in a liberal kind of mood today. I'll probably get over it.
