< Once upon a time (1992?) ROSS used to make a lot of money. Then something changed and they never did again. Does anyone remember what they used to do right and no longer do? Did the market change radically all of a sudden? What?<

I think that question is fairly easy to answer: no foresight! Ross had built its business around a UNIX, host based architecture and was way behind the market move to windows based client/server. They couldn't compete for new customers and started to lose the ones they had. Completely lost in this sea of change they made a number of mistakes that used up precious cash and increased expenses.

It just comes down to complacency and bad management. Its also fairly common with matured co's. Its much harder for them to change course than it is for small or start-up co's.

The asset that they had was their installed base and they've been moving to develop the kinds of products that the market wants. Whether or not this will continue is hard to say...
